UBU links

Following up on Nick's post, here are some links to the ubu.com site:

Some films/videos related to John Cage, and a long list of experimental films and videos

Look elsewhere on the ubu site for materials from other artists mentioned in Nick's post (Tony Conrad, Philip Glass, etc.)

Experimental Sound, Music, Circuits

For those of you who might be interested in some of the more far-flung possibilities for music making, I offer the following list. Feel free to add, comment, experiment.

Electronic/Experimental/Odd Music Discography:
Of course, this is completely subjective and filled with holes and fissures, but for those of you interested in learning more about these genres, here are some good starting points....

"OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music" Compilation (a really good place to start for more historical stuff)
"An Anthology of Noise and Electronic Music" (there are four or five of these)
Raymond Scott "Soothing Sounds for Baby"
Wendy Carlos "Switched on Bach"
Tony Conrad "Fantastic Glissando" and "Outside the Dream Syndicate"
Steve Reich (anything, really)
Bruce Haack "Electric Lucifer"
Philip Glass
Amon Tobin "Bricolage"
Tangerine Dream "Phaedra" and "Sorcerer"
Klaus Schultze "Cyborg"
Vangelis "Blade Runner"
Silver Apples "Silver Apple" "Contact" (there's a cd that has both of these albums on it... amazingly ahead-o'-its-time electronic drone pop)
Pierre Henry "Le Voyage" "Tibeten Book of the Dead" (seriously minimal and creepy)
V/A "Electronic Toys: A Retrospective of 70s Synthesizer Music"
Pauline Oliveros
Cornelius "Fantasma"
8 Bit Weapon "Vaporware Soundtracks"
Arthur Russell "First Thought Best Thought
Godspeed You Black Emperor "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" (though not strictly electronic, the minimalist aesthetic is compelling--and it's a potentially life-changing record. See also Sigur Ros...)
Aphex Twin "Selected Ambient Works Vol. I and II"
Neu! (S/T)
John Oswald "69 Plunderphonics"
Merzbow
Biosphere "Patashnik" and "Autour del la Lune" (though all his records--and there are many-- are quite compelling)
Boards of Canada "Geogaddi"
Brian Eno "Discrete Music" and "Music for Airports" and "Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror" (crucial! important!)
Mouse on Mars "Autoditacker"
Neptune (experimental rock band from Boston, but they build all their instruments out of scrap metal... guitars included)
Kraftwerk, all records are worth owning. Really.
Manitoba "Start Breaking My HEart"
Gary Numan "Replicas" "The Pleasure Principle" "Telekom" (science fiction-ish electro pop that inspired NIN among others)
and so on.....

Experimental Music Bibliography
Christoph Cox "Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Music"

Douglas Kahn's "Noise Water Meat: A History of Sound in the Arts"

Thomas Holmes' "Electronic and Experimental Music"

R. Murray Schafer's "The Soundscape" (a more general introduction to the idea of sound environments, really influential if a bit 70s)

Brandon Labelle "Background Noise: Perspectives on Sound Art"

John Cage "Silence: Lectures and Writing"

Michael Nyman "Experimental Music: Çage and Beyond"

Karlheinz Stockhausen "Stockhausen on Music"

more spaces

we also saw a bunch of nice big open lots with huge, white back walls in between bars near hells kitchen. might be too cold for january, but could be awesome for a spring or summer event. definately something to keep in mind.
When downtown last night i found this awsome empty space on on front street going away from the bar, the only bad bit is that its the other direction, but only a block away, let me know if anyone wants to see it

Minutes from the First Meeting

Damian was kind enough to go home and type up minutes from the first meeting so I thought Id post those in case anyone missed them. Our next meeting will be Dec 2nd at 5pm. Save the date!

*********
On November 4, 2007 at 5:00pm, we had 14 members attend the first W.T.F. meeting.
Present were: Andre Silva, Shannon Silva, Annie Segrest, Oliver Mellan, Jim Kreul, Kevin Wilson, Steve Rogers, Micki Wheeler, Lexi Lefkowitz, Aaron Cavazos, Justin Plakas, Nick Laudadio, Damian Ashley and James Grantham.

The meeting started at 5:10pm.

-Andre entertained us with his stories from his childhood, which were quite hilarious.
-We talked about a 24 hour film painting marathon, using 1000ft. clear film that people will alter.
-As part of the above event a Pancake Midnight Breakfast was discussed.
-An all night Gallery-like show involving improv, different art forms (exp. music, vjing, spoken word, writen word, dance), ending with screening.
-Need to look for warehouse space. Preferably downtown.
-Nick discussed music element, wants a make your own instrument, non-melodic element.
-Everyone with their own talents come together to teach eachother and try everything.
-Justin Plakas, Nick Laudadio and Jim Kruel offered to share resources and experiences, much like the Silvas have been doing.
-The group discussed each persons strengths/what we bring to the table.
-As a group we bring the following: photography, dance, VJ-ing, handpainting film, hand processing, event planning, festival organization, popcorn providing, instilation, motion graphic design, resident marxism, generative art/generative sound art, experimental everything.
-Steve expressed an interest in involving spoken word; Micki in involving written word, others in getting the film and VJ-ing to flow with the other events going on.
-Andre offered to video tape events; James to record events photographically.
-It was recommended that Oliver and Annie pre-record an instructional dance piece to be played/performed at the event in their absence.
-It was suggested that people do what they normally wouldn't do.
-We would start with nothing --->end with product (maybe not finished product, but close to it).
-Justin agreed to be our location guru
-As others see possible venues send info to Justin via email
-First event date - late January.

-NEXT MEETING December 2nd at 5pm
Questions and updates:
-Venue?
-Date?
-How the whole event will go down?
-How to convey experience to those coming in/or passing by?
